  Hybrid Structures - The Big Picture

In this workshop participants will discuss with the partners of the EU project FlexHyJoin what future applications and products can be realized with hybrid materials and how to overcome existing challenges.

This workshop is organized in cooperation with FlexHyJoin Technology (EU Project).

Aim of the international project FlexHyJoin, funded by the European Union’s program for research and innovation “Horizon 2020”, is the novel development of a fully automatized joining process for the automotive industry. Its objective is to enable rapid manufacturing of hybrid metal/thermoplastic-based fiber reinforced polymer composite (TP-FRPC) parts. FlexHyJoin will support the industry-wide usage of metal/TP-FRPC hybrid components in automotive mass production.

Germany’s energy transition project (Energiewende) still implies various challenges. The renewable power generation sector shows reasonable progress. However, the sectors heat and mobility have a rather week development in terms of renewable energy supply and still have a long way to go.
In order to reach the climate objectives set, the three aforementioned sectors will have to interact closely (sector coupling). Materials will play an important role: they can e.g. facilitate renewable energy generation, act as an energy storage, enhance energy transportation, or reduce energy consumption. Therefore, it is necessary to have a deep understanding about the materials itself as well as to have good knowledge about the framework of energy systems.

The objective of workshop “Materials for reliable energy supply” is to identify materials and possible applications in a renewable energy system.

The workshop has two consecutive stages at MatX and the Integration of Sustainable Energy Expo & Conference (iSEnEC):

1. MatX
After a short introduction into the subject, the workshop participants generate possible ideas for novel applications of energy materials and address specific questions regarding the enery transition: What problem will be solved by the new idea? How does the solution work? Will it fit to the existing energy system? At the end of the workshop, the ideas are recorded in an idea profiling board. This serves as basis for the second stage workshop at the iSEnEC Conference which takes place on July 17th-18th 2018 in Nuremberg.

2. iSEnEC
In order to set the framework of the second workshop, the idea profiling boards from the MatX workshop will be presented. The workshop participants can choose from these ideas and discuss single topics in more detail: What role can this idea play in an integrated energy system? Who will be a future client? How can a business case look like? This additional information is added to the profiling boards to develop possible business cases.

At the end of the two workshops, all elaborated ideas will be made available for the conference participants of both MatX and iSEnEC.

In the realm of industrial 3D printing, participants will learn how data becomes the most valuable asset for the manufacturing of consumer and industry goods, and how companies need to prepare for the ensuing changes in their business models. The participants can expect a discussion around the following topics:

  • 3D Printing – more than the digitization of production
  • „Datafication“ of design and manufacturing processes
  • 3D Printing – a way to new business models
  • The new “crown jewels” of the Company
  • Challenges, risks and product liability in digital production
  • Data as an asset: who owns the data?
  • Cyber risks and digital threats: privacy, cyber security, and legal security
  • Protecting and adding value to trade secrets in digital ecosystems
  • No Man is an Island: overhaul or get passed

The topics will be covered in a dynamic discussion amongst the speakers, to which the participants can ask questions.

Goals of the Workshop

The workshop aims to make participants aware that the digitization of design and production is no longer just a topic of the future. Rather, it has already begun, bringing great opportunities as well as risks that must be actively managed in order to be competitive and avoid legal complications. Using practical examples, the speakers will show what matters the most, which role the business processes play, and why the technical and legal safeguards must interlock to make the catchphrase “Industry 4.0” a success story.

Send us an email to MatX2018@bayern-innovativ.de. Only registered MatX participants are eligible to apply for Tech2you. Presentation slots are limited and are on first come first serve basis.
